Weekend national elections in Thailand must be free, fair and peaceful, UPI cited a spokesman for the U.N. secretary-general as saying. Thailand holds national elections Sunday. Opposition candidates challenging incumbent Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva include Yingluck Shinawatra, the older brother of Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, ousted in a 2006 military coup. U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in a statement through his office said the spirit of reconciliation should prevail at the ballot box. "He expects the elections will be conducted peacefully and in a fair, credible and transparent manner so as to contribute to reconciliation and the consolidation of democratic norms in the country," his statement read.
