The prospect of a national day of protest in Britain against government spending cuts grew closer Wednesday as a number of unions backed a plan for coordinated strike action on June 30, according to dpa. The one-day strike could see teachers, lecturers and public sector workers take to the streets in what could be the biggest industrial action in Britain for many years. Members of four unions - the National Union of Teachers; the Association of Teachers and Lecturers; Public and Commercial Services Union; and University and College Union - have voted to walk out in protest against a threat to pensions, pay and jobs. The government announced large-scale public sector spending cuts last October in an effort to reduce the record budget deficit. But unions insists that their members are unfairly held to account for economic problems that were not caused by them at a time of a public sector pay freeze and rising inflation.
