At least eight miners are trapped in a collapsed coal mine in southeastern Colombia, and authorities expressed hope they may be alive. An official from the city of Cali said noises have been heard from inside the mine, though they were not human voices. The miners are trapped about 60 meters from the mine's entrance. Colombian Red Cross rescue chief Alfonso Vargas said the causes of Tuesday's accident remain unknown. Heavy rains have fallen on the region and could have contributed to the collapse. Vargas said about 50 rescuers were working at the Loma Gorda mine near Cali. Vargas would not say whether the miners have access to water or mobile telephones or whether they are trapped under debris.
