Singapore's long-ruling People's Action Party (PAP) has clinched over two-thirds of the seats in the next parliament, Reuters quoted state television as reporting after the city-state's most hotly contested election since independence, The two-thirds majority will allow the PAP to amend the constitution, giving it wide powers to pursue its policy agenda. As of 2 a.m. on Sunday (1800 GMT Saturday), Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong's PAP had won 66 of the 87 elected seats, television said. Only one seat had so far gone to the opposition. Full results will be available within the next few hours. The opposition had contested 82 seats, the most ever, with the PAP returned unopposed from one five-seat constituency. In 2006, the PAP won about 67 percent of the vote and 82 of 84 seats, with just over half the seats contested. For the current election, the city-state was divided into 15 GRCs of four to six seats each, and 12 single member constituencies.
