Officials at the scene said the most likely cause of the explosion was a terrorist bombing, the news agency Interfax reported. Witnesses told the Belapan news agency that black smoke could be seen rising from the underground. Hundreds of people evacuated the station after the explosion, which took place at the height of rush hour. Ambulances and firefighters were on the scene as well KGB agents and police, who cordoned off the blast site and blocked an adjacent metro station. Medics were treating some victims outside the metro entrance, while at least six others were taken away in ambulances. Some were bloody and others had blackened faces, web photographs showed.
