Awwal 07, 1432, 2011, SPA -- In a statement from Tripoli, the African Union says Muammar Gaddafi has assured the presidents of five African countries that he supports their efforts to bring about a cease-fire. The A.U. committee met with Gaddafi Sunday in Libya's capital and travels to Benghazi, Libya Monday to meet Gaddafi's opposition. On the truce, the A.U. says Gaddafi endorsed efforts, «including the deployment of an effective and credible monitoring mechanism.» The A.U. committee on Libya is seeking an immediate cease-fire, the free delivery of humanitarian aid, the protection of foreigners in Libya, and to open talks between the rebels and the government, according to a report of the Associated Press.
