Smoke rising from the spent fuel storage pool of the plant's Unit 3 prompted the evacuation, Tokyo Electric Power Co. spokesman Hiroshi Aizawa said. The smoke raises concerns about the water level in the pool needed to keep the fuel from overheating and releasing even greater amounts of radiation. «We are checking the cause of the smoke,» nuclear safety agency official Hidehiko Nishiyama told reporters in Tokyo.
