Akhir 13, 1432 H/March 18, 2011, SPA -- Russia hopes there will be no large-scale foreign military intervention in Libya although some provisions of the UN Security Council resolution may result in such a scenario, according to Russian Ambassador to the United Nations Vitaly Churkin. According to ITAR TASS, “They potentially open the door for a large-scale military intervention,” he told reporters after the vote. “During the discussion assurances were voiced about the absence of such intentions. We take them into account,” the ambassador said. The U.N. Security Council voted on Thursday to authorize a no-fly zone over Libya and “all necessary measures” to protect civilians against attacks by the armed forces loyal to Muammar Gaddafi. Russia and four other council members abstained.
