Akhir 10, 1432, March 15, 2011, SPA -- The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) on Monday said the Japanese government has formally asked the United States for assistance with cooling nuclear reactors damaged by a major earthquake last week. The NRC said it is responding to the request and considering providing Japan with technical advice. A massive earthquake and tsunami hit Japan on Friday, killing at least 10,000 people and triggering a crisis at three of the country's nuclear reactors. Japanese officials are working to cool the reactors damaged in the disaster. NRC has already sent to Japan two agency officials with expertise in boiling water nuclear reactors, as part of a U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) team. USAID is a federal agency that helps countries dealing with disasters.
