Akhir 05 , 1432 H. / March 10, 2011 -- Human Rights Watch says the Angolan government has used intimidation and baseless threats of a return to civil war to prevent pro-democracy protests, according to AP. The New York-based organization denounced anonymous death threats sent to opposition politicians and human rights lawyers, and said the cars of two lawyers were set ablaze. Human Rights Watch on Thursday also condemned several arbitrary arrests ahead of a failed protest called by an anonymous group. Angolan leader Jose Eduardo dos Santos has been in power for 32 years. The southern African nation is rich in diamonds and oil, but its people are impoverished and its infrastructure in ruins after years of civil war.
