Awwal 28, 1432 H/March 3, 2011, SPA -- Three communist rebels and one policeman were killed in a clash in the northern Philippines, a police report said Thursday. According to dap, the fighting erupted late Wednesday when patrolling officers encountered the guerrillas in Candelaria town in Zambales province, 165 kilometres north of Manila, the report said. More troops were dispatched to the area to pursue the guerrillas. Communist rebels have been fighting the government since the late 1960s, making the movement one of the longest-running leftist insurgencies in Asia. Last month, government and rebel negotiators resumed formal peace talks in Oslo, Norway after being stalled for more than six years and agreed to finish negotiations in 18 months.
