Awwal 22, 1432 H/Feb 25, 2011, SPA -- At least four people were killed Friday when gunmen attacked a convoy of NATO oil tankers in north-western Pakistan, government officials said. According to dpa, two more people were injured in the pre-dawn attack that also left more than 10 lorries bound for landlocked Afghanistan destroyed in Peshawar, the capital of the north-western province of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa. Siraj Ahmad, the city's top civil administrator, said that between 15 and 20 attackers raided a terminal where around 40 oil tankers were parked and used assault rifles and rocket propelled grenades in the attack. Ahmad said that those killed were the guards. Firefighters took six hours to the extinguish the blaze. No one has claimed responsibility but officials said they suspected Taliban militants of carrying out the strike. In 2010, more than 170 supply vehicles were torched and six people, most of them drivers, were killed in militant attacks on NATO supply convoys. According to official figures, 80 per cent of NATO supplies are transported to Afghanistan via Pakistan.
