Awwal 19, 1432, Feb 22, 2011, SPA -- At least 36 people have died in a crush while listening to an Islamic preacher in Mali, the West African nation's daily Le Republicain reported Tuesday. Tens of thousands had come to the Modibo Keita stadium in Bamako to hear Ousmane Madani Haidara preach when the crowd surged forward, crushing people against a metal barrier, DPA quoted the newspaper as saying. At least 64 were injured in the second deadly stampede in Mali in recent years, the newspaper added. Dozens died in 2009 during a stampede near a mosque in the northern city of Timbuktu.
