Awwal 08, 1432, Feb 11, 2011, SPA -- German President Christian Wulff on Friday stressed the need to guarantee the financial stability of the eurozone and expressed support for Spain and Portugal in their attempts to overcome their debt crisis, dpa reported. Wulff was speaking to journalists during a visit to Portugal, where he arrived from Spain on Thursday. Spain and Portugal appeared willing to "compromise" with Germany's strict stability requirements, which would form the basis for a European Union "competitiveness pact," the president said. He rejected concerns that Germany was trying to "dictate" conditions to smaller and economically weaker eurozone countries, having previously stressed the need for a "culture of stability" in Europe. Portuguese President Anibal Cavaco Silva, who held talks with Wulff on Thursday, emphasized the importance of decisions that are to be taken in March by the European Union on measures to guarantee the stability of the euro. Wulff's programme in Portugal included a visit to a Volkswagen car factory in Palmela, near Lisbon. -- SPA 111514 GMT Feb 11
