Awwal 04, 1432 H/Feb 07, 2011, SPA -- A U.N. agency said that floods and heavy rains have significantly damaged whole areas of agricultural land across southern Africa and that the livelihood and food security of farmers and their families are at risk, AP reported. The Food and Agriculture Organization warned Monday that more damage might occur since the rainy season is only half over and the cyclone season is due to peak this month. It warned of high risks of flooding in several agricultural areas of Botswana, Lesotho, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe. FAO said in some flooded areas in Lesotho up to 60 percent of harvests already have been lost and thousands of sheep and goats killed. The agency noted food insecurity levels are already critical in many of the affected areas. -- SPA
