Awwal 01, 1432, Feb 04, 2011, SPA -- Most of a pod of more than 80 pilot whales stranded on a remote New Zealand beach refloated themselves on the high tide overnight, the Department of Conservation said on Saturday according to dpa. Fourteen of the whales died at Puponga Point, at the top of the South Island, after beaching on Friday and a DOC spokesman said it was feared the survivors could strand again on the 24-kilometre long Farewell Spit before they were safely out to sea. DOC staff who monitored the mammals overnight because it was too dangerous to attempt a human-assisted refloat in the dark said they could be heard communicating with each other when the tide came in at midnight and an hour later they had swum off.
