Awwal 01, 1432, Feb 04, 2011, SPA -- A retired army general who became the police chief of the violent Mexican border city of Nuevo Laredo a month ago was killed along with two of his bodyguards, authorities said Thursday. A spokesman for the Nuevo Laredo public-safety department said Manuel Farfan was shot to death in the center of the city, which is located across the border from Laredo, Texas. The spokesman said four members of Farfan's guard detail were wounded in the attack Wednesday night. Two later died from their wounds. Farfan had received two telephone threats since taking over as the city's top public-safety official in early January. Nuevo Laredo, like other Mexican border cities, has witnessed bloody drug-gang battles over lucrative smuggling routes into the United States.
