Initial tests have indicated that a 17-year-old Italian female ski jumper found lifeless in her hotel room likely died of a rapid case of meningitis, according to AP. Simona Senoner, who finished 10th in the 2008 junior worlds, died Friday in Schonach, Germany, where she was competing in a Continental Cup meet. In a statement Sunday detailing the possible cause, the Italian Winter Sports Federation also said an autopsy on Senoner's body is scheduled for Monday in Germany. Meningitis is an infection of the fluid surrounding the spinal cord and brain that can be caused by bacterial, viral, or fungal infection. It can be spread by coughing, sneezing and kissing, and most cases occur in previously healthy children and young adults.
