The Secretary General of the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC), Professor Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, condemned today in the strongest terms an incident in Saints Church in Alexandria at dawn on Saturday (January 01, 2011) resulting in the killing and wounding of a large number of innocent citizens. In a press statement issued here today, he expressed his condolences to the leadership, government and people of the Arab Republic of Egypt as well as to the families of the victims and wished speedy recovery to the wounded ones. He urged the people of the city of Alexandria in particular, and the Egyptian people in general to disassociate themselves from attempts to instigate sedition or spread division among the people which some want to implant among them. He urged the people to uphold to their unity and the higher interests of their country which can only be achieved through uniting against terrorism that does not distinguish between any race, sect or religion. The Secretary General also expressed his support for the efforts undertaken by the Egyptian government in order to avert the danger and confront terrorism in all its forms and manifestations, whatever its source.
