Vietnam's economy grew 6.8 per cent this year, up from 5.3 per cent last year, but inflation has overshot the official target, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung said Thursday, according to dpa. Speaking on the first day of the government's monthly development review meeting, he said this year's growth was the highest for three years. In 2008, the economy grew 6.3 per cent. The growth was driven by a rise in exports and industrial output. Vietnam's exports grew more than 25 per cent and the industrial output grew 14 per cent compared with last year. However, inflation reached an annual 11.8 per cent, overstepping the government's target maximum of 8 per cent for the year. On Friday, the government was to discuss its work programme for 2011, with the target of achieving economic growth of more than 7 per cent.
