Transportation in the Czech Republic ground to a halt Thursday amid ice, snow and bitter, Arctic-like temperatures, according to dpa. Several highways were shut down, and the extreme cold was making rails brittle, forcing railway authorities to stop train services in places along the route between Prague and Decin on the western border. Overnight Thursday, temperatures fell to as low as minus 31 degrees Celsius in the northern Bohemia region.
