Hijjah, 1431/Nov. 16, SPA -- At least 65 people were killed and 100 injured when a five-storey residential building collapsed in the Indian capital, news reports said Tuesday. At least 30 people were still trapped in the debris of the building that collapsed in New Delhi's Laxmi Nagar area late Monday, dpa quoted. Ten of the injured were in critical condition. Most of victims were workers living on the site. The fire brigade, police and municipal officials, with the help of residents, were engaged in rescue operations and removal of debris. The cause of the collapse was not clear, but Delhi Finance Minister AK Walia said recent floods had weakened the foundations of the building. "It seems that the basement of the building was filled with water, which could have caused the collapse," Walia said. Other officials blamed substandard construction for the tragedy. Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit ordered an inquiry.
