Hijjah 06, 1431 H/Nov. 12, 2010, SPA -- UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon welcomed on Friday the new government in Iraq, saying that the compromise reached by political parties would "serve the collective interest of the Iraqi people." He commended the re-election of Iraq's President Jalal Talabani, the nomination of Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki to keep his job and the election of leaders of the Iraqi Parliament, according to dpa. "The secretary general calls on Iraqi leaders to continue demonstrating the same spirit of partnership in moving swiftly to conclude the formation of a new government," Ban said. "The United Nations is committed to assisting the people and government of Iraq in their efforts to achieve national reconciliation and build a strong and prosperous country."
