Qa'dah 18, 1431, Oct 26, 2010, SPA -- European Union officials on Tuesday insisted that the bloc's planned satellite navigation (satnav) system is on track to start operations in 2014. "Galileo is becoming a reality. Europe will have its own independent satellite navigation system capable of high precision and reliability," EU Industry commissioner Antonio Tajani was quoted as saying by DPA in Brussels. He was speaking as a SpaceOpal-GmbH, a joint venture comprising Germany's DLR GfR and Italy's Telespazio, signed a 194-million-euro contract (270-million-dollar) to supply "industrial services" in support of satellite and ground operations for the project. "We are fully committed to the roll-out of the system," Tajani said.
