Qa'da 10, 1431, Oct 18, 2010, SPA -- U.S. and U.N. envoys are meeting in Rome with NATO's top commander in Afghanistan for daylong talks, amid a renewed push to end the nine-year-old Afghan war, the Associated Press reported. Monday's meeting will look at peace talks between the Afghan government and Taliban representatives and ways to increase the assumption of responsibility for security by Afghan forces. Commanding Gen. David Petraeus has said coalition forces have allowed Taliban representatives to travel to Kabul for peace discussions with the Afghan government, although a Taliban spokesman has dismissed the talk as propaganda. Attendees also include Richard Holbrooke, U.S. special envoy for Afghanistan and Pakistan; Staffan de Mistura, the top U.N. envoy in Afghanistan; and Afghan Foreign Minister Zalmal Rassoul.
