US federal authorities arrested more than 100 people on Wednesday in Puerto Rico in a sweeping crackdown on local police corruption, authorities said according to dpa. Eighty-nine police officers and 44 other individuals were charged with crimes mostly related to narcotic distribution and firearms, the Federal Bureau of Investigation said. The alleged offenses took place from July 2008 to September 2010. The FBI said 129 suspects were taken into custody on Wednesday, while four remain at large. The FBI said Operation Guard Shack was the largest police corruption investigation in the history of the bureau. A Carribean island east of the Dominican Republic, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico is an unincorporated territory of the United States.
