U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates is expected to meet his Chinese counterpart next week at a security conference in Vietnam, the Pentagon said Tuesday, one week after Beijing resumed military relations with Washington. “I don't know that we've confirmed it as of yet. But I think both sides clearly wish to have such a meeting,” chief Pentagon spokesman Geoff Morrell told reporters. U.S. and Chinese officials also are working to arrange a possible visit by Gates to Beijing in the coming months, possibly in early 2011, Morrell said.
