The Spanish government Friday condemned plans by a US pastor to burn Korans as an "insult" to Muslims and as a"provocation" towards those defending religious freedom, DPA reported Florida reverend Terry Jones said late Thursday he might reconsider his earlier decision to call off the Koran-burning event. The Spanish Foreign Ministry expressed confidence that the numerous protests against the event would persuade its organizers not to carry it out. The upcoming anniversary of the attacks of September 11, 2001 in the United States should not "be used by those advocating division and confrontation to offend the deepest feelings and convictions of millions of people," the ministry said in a statement. Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero said there had been an"emphatic reaction" against any attempts to attack Islam, describing pastor Jones' plans as something "unusual."
