The National Hurricane Center in Miami issued a tropical storm warning for the coasts of Maine and Nova Scotia, where Earl hit land Saturday at about 10 am. Earl - downgraded from a hurricane to a severe tropical storm - was about 50 miles west-southwest of Halifax, Nova Scotia, and was moving in a northeast direction at about 36 mph with maximum sustained winds of 70 mph, UPI quoted the Hurricane Center as saying in its 11 am advisory. The storm warning was discontinued for Nantucket, Mass., which was hit with strong winds and up to 6 inches of rain, but remained in effect for the entire coastline of Nova Scotia. Large and destructive waves are expected for the province, along with up to 5 inches of rain, the center said.
