The Galeras Volcano erupted in southwestern Colombia on Wednesday, forcing hundreds of people out of their homes. Marta Calvache of Colombia's Geology and Mining Institute said that a burst of gases, ash, and vapor rose from the volcano at 0900 GMT. The mountain's peak is 4,276 meters above sea level. Colombian Red Cross representative Carlos Marquez said that 278 people have evacuated the area around the volcano. He said so far there were no reports of damage.
