U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Monday said he was “deeply saddened” by the flooding in Pakistan that has reportedly caused the deaths of more than 1,000 people. The floods, which started Thursday, were the worst in Pakistan's history and have affected more than 1 million people. “The secretary-general is deeply saddened by the significant loss of lives, livelihoods, and infrastructure in Pakistan,” Ban spokesman Martin Nesirky told reporters Monday. The secretary-general also reiterated the full commitment of the United Nations to “meeting the humanitarian needs of the population affected.” In addition to the aid the United Nations is already providing, the Ban authorized the disbursement of up to $10 million from an emergency response fund to help address the needs of the population, Nesirky said. Meanwhile, the U.N. refugee agency said Monday that it has sent teams to northwestern Pakistan to distribute relief supplies to those made homeless. The agency said it has now distributed some 10,000 tents.
