The total amount of debt Haiti owed international institutions at the time of a devastating January earthquake has now been cancelled, dpa quoted US Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner as saying Friday. Geithner said the final piece was put in place when US President Barack Obama signed a supplementary budget bill Thursday night that included 248 million dollars for relieving Haiti's debt. Haiti owed 696 million dollars to international institutions like the International Monetary Fund, World Bank and Inter-American Development Bank. The money had been cancelled over the past few months in a bid to ease the burden on Haiti as it recovers from the massive January earthquake that killed more than 200,000 people. "We are proud to stand together with our international partners at the forefront of this decisive response, Geithner said.
