Pirates have attacked a fishing vessel in coastal waters off Cameroon and Nigeria, killing one seaman and injuring eight, dpa quoted officials as saying Monday. Attacks are on the rise in the Atlantic ocean near the Bakassi Peninsula, with pirates looking to rob boats rather than hold crews to ransom, as is the case off Somalia. Eyango Isaac, manager of local shipping firm CamSpain, said the pirates looted the ship when they attacked it on Saturday. "They took everything that could be moved from the ships. Every machine was taken away, along with money and personal property of crew members," he said. One of the survivors, known as Ngenge, said that one of the crew had died. "I was down in the cabin when I heard a ... a gun shot," he said. "When I ran out to see what was wrong, one of the men slapped me and told me to sit in a corner." "The man who died ... was shot in the chest," he added.
