Thailand's military says a suspected insurgent was killed and another turned himself in during a raid in the country's restive south, according to AP. Lt. Col. Prathan Talabthong says the military, police and paramilitary troops surrounded a house in Pattani province's Mayo district. One suspected insurgent immediately surrendered. Four hours later, another man opened fire at the security forces, leading to an exchange of gunfire. Afterward, authorities found his dead body. Prathan says he was wanted by the police. Also Wednesday, police Col. Suwat Wongpaiboon said a village defense volunteer was shot dead in an insurgent attack in nearby Yala province. Over 4,000 people have been killed in the region since 2004.
