Poland's statistics office says the country's jobless rate declined to 11.9 percent in May, from 12.3 the month before, according to AP. Figures released Thursday by the state Central Statistical Office showed a steady decline in unemployment since February, when it was at 13 percent. The office says people are finding seasonal jobs in the construction, farming, forestry, tourism and transport sectors. Poland's unemployment rate peaked at 20.7 percent in 2003 as the country struggled to make the transition from a communist to market economy. Joining the European Union in 2004 helped the eastern European nation of 38 million people fight joblessness and unemployment hit as low as 8.8 percent in October 2008, just before the global economic crisis hit.
