Spain's birth rate dropped by five per cent in 2009, in its first fall for a decade, the national statistics body INE said Tuesday. The average number of children per woman in child-bearing age was 1.40, down from 1.46 in 2008, dpa reported. In 2009, Spanish women had an average of 1.33 children - down from 1.38 in 2008 - while foreign women had an average of 1.69 children, down from 1.81 in 2008, INE said.
