World Trade Organization chief Pascal Lamy, Nobel laureate Paul Krugman and German publishing heiress Liz Mohn were jointly presented Sunday with a prestigious German economics award, dpa reported. The annual prize from the Kiel-based economic think tank IfW rewards a politician, an economist and a business figure for promoting free enterprise and social justice. Lamy, a French national, has grappled to resolve the deadlock in free trade negotiations since taking charge of the WTO in 2005, while Krugman, a US professor, is one of the world's most influential economists. Mohn sits at the helm of German publishing giant Bertelsmann, which she took over last year after the death of her husband. IfW President Dennis Snower said this year's prizewinners had all demonstrated how economic efficiencies can be combined with social responsibility. He lauded Lamy for "campaigning to remove trade barriers" in order to generate more wealth through trade, and said Mohn's engagement in charitable projects helped "improve social frameworks." -- SPA
