A policewoman was declared brain dead today after being fired upon during a vehicle spot-check on a motorway outside Paris, dpa cited France Info radio as reporting. Another police officer was wounded in the shootout, which also left four civilians injured, one of them seriously, in its wake. The motorway was temporarily closed after the incident. Earlier reports had said that the policewoman had died from her wounds. Some media reports said as many as five men, some of them armed with assault rifles, were involved. They fled the scene in a van, which was later found burned out. The suspects reportedly stole two more cars as they fled from police.
