New measures aimed at minimizing the disruption to air travel caused by volcanic ash clouds will be introduced in Britain from Tuesday, dpa quoted the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) as saying late today. The CAA said a Time Limited Zone (TLZ) had been agreed, in which it would be safe to allow flights for a limited period at higher ash densities than were currently allowed. To operate in the new zone, airlines needed to present the CAA with a safety case that included the agreement of their aircraft and engine manufacturers. "I'm pleased that the huge efforts we're all making across aviation to keep flying safe while minimizing the disruption from the volcano have resulted in further progress," said CAA chief executive Andrew Haines. The authority had earlier been criticized for being excessively cautious on its ash level and no-fly zone rulings.
