Gunmen attacked a police checkpoint in north-western Pakistan on Friday, killing four officers, security officials said, according to dpa. One more policeman was wounded in the pre-dawn attack that took place in Mensehra, a mountainous district in Khyber-Pakthunkhwa, formerly known as North-West Frontier Province. "Unknown attackers opened fire at the police checkpoint located on the Karakorum Highway and managed to flee after the attack," said Niaz Ahmad, a local police officer. The identity of the assailants was not immediately known, nor had any group claimed responsibility for the attack. Islamist militants linked to the Taliban have previously attacked civilian and official targets in the district, located some 120 kilometers north-east of provincial capital Peshawar. Rebels attacked two police stations in the district, killing one officer and wounding four others in February. On March 10, gunmen armed with assault rifles and hand grenades raided the office of an aid group, World Vision, in Ogay area of the district, killing six Pakistani staffers including two women.
