The first draft of NATO's strategic concept, elaborating a new long term strategy for the military alliance, is to be presented to the public in Brussels on May 17, dpa quoted officials as saying today. The document, aimed at replacing the existing strategic concept adopted by NATO in 1999, has been drafted by a group of 12 top experts, headed by former US Secretary of State Madeleine Albright. NATO spokesman James Appathurai said Albright would present their findings in a joint press conference with the alliance's secretary general, Anders Fogh Rasmussen. Albright's panel was formed last year with the task to advise NATO on the most important security challenges of the next decade, and the ways in which the alliance will have to adapt to deal with them. NATO states are to debate the proposal over the summer, with leaders expected to approve the strategic concept at a summit in November in Lisbon.
