Ukraine plans to rid itself of its stockpile of highly enriched uranium by 2012, President Viktor Yanukovich announced Monday after a meeting with President Barack Obama on the sidelines of a nuclear security summit in the US capital. It was not announced where Ukraine's uranium would be transferred to, but both the United States and Russia would play a role in securing Ukraine's stockpile, White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said. In a joint statement from the two leaders, Obama praised the announcement "as a historic step and a reaffirmation of Ukraine's leadership in nuclear security and nonproliferation." Gibbs said Ukraine's stockpile of highly-enriched fuel was enough for several nuclear weapons. By getting rid of the materials, Ukraine will instead convert its own civil nuclear facilities to operate with low-enriched uranium.
