Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall and wife of Prince Charles, has broken her left leg while hillwalking in Scotland, dpa quoted Clarence House in London as saying today. The 62-year-old duchess, who has a history of back trouble, suffered the accident a day before the fifth anniversary of her wedding to Prince Charles on April 9, 2005. The pair, who recently undertook a nine-day tour to several Central European countries, had been planning to mark the day with a stay at Birkhall, the Prince of Wales's private home on the royal estate of Balmoral in Scotland. A Clarence House spokeswoman said Camilla suffered a twisted fracture of her left fibula when she slipped in wet conditions while outdoors Wednesday. The break was confirmed by an x-ray Thursday. "Consequently her royal highness is wearing a plaster cast and will be for six weeks," said the spokeswoman. Although doctors had advised her not to put any weight on her leg, the duchess intended to carry out all her official engagements scheduled for up to the end of April. The spokeswoman said Prince Charles, 61, was not with his wife at the time the accident happened, and was in London for an engagement Thursday. However, the couple had spent time "privately" at Birkhall together, she told German Press-Agency dpa.
