An earthquake measuring 5.3 on the Richter scale shook West Sumatra about 68 km northeast of Sipuramentawai, at 5.33 am local time, on Sunday, according to Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysical office (BMKG). The BMKG also mentioned that the epicenter of the quake was recorded at 2.06 degrees south latitude and -100.25 degrees eastern longitude, at a depth of 23 km. It said that the quake had no potential to create a tsunami. The epicenter is also located some 74 km northeast of North Pagai of Mentawai Island in West Sumatra, 86 km southwest of Painan of West Sumatra and about 862 km northwest of Jakarta, ANTARA reported.
