One person died and at least 10 were injured in a stampede today, as tens of thousands ended a week of mourning over the recent destruction of four royal tombs, dpa cited radio reports as saying. A fire destroyed a gigantic straw-thatched hut that housed the tombs of four tribal leaders of the powerful Buganda Kingdom on March 16. Countless artifacts of royal regalia kept in the tombs, which are a UNESCO World Heritage site, were also burned. After the Buganda Kingdom declared a week of mourning, thousands of its subjects thronged the tombs near the capital Kampala. Florence Namyaro was trampled after crowds surged to get near the Bugandas' current reigning monarch, Ronald Muwenda Mutebi, who had joined the mourners. She died shortly after at a hospital. Among the injured was a 6-year-old boy who had both his legs broken, Prime Radio reported. Friday's ceremonies featured prayers by church and Muslim leaders, along with traditional rituals.
