One year on from a school gun rampage in which 16 people died, pupils, teachers and bereaved family members gathered on Thursday for silent remembrance in the German town of Winnenden, according to dpa. Around 900 people stood in a hall opposite the Albertville secondary school, where former pupil Tim Kretschmer began his gun rampage, killing 15 people before turning the gun on himself. President Horst Koehler is to hold an address in Winnenden. Memorial plaques will be placed in front of the school building, where no classes have been held since last year's attack. Security was high during the memorial events. Several hundred policemen patrolled the area, and the school itself was cordoned off. On March 11, 2009, nine pupils and three teachers were killed before 17-year-old Kretschmer fled the building, shooting three other people. He had found the weapon in his parents' bedroom.
