The U.N.'s head of peacekeeping operations says despite the government of Congo's wish for peacekeepers to leave the country next year, much remains to be done in the east and north which are being terrorized by Rwandan and Ugandan gunmen, according to AP. Alain Le Roy told reporters Wednesday night the U.N. is ready to start withdrawing its peacekeepers from central and southeast Congo by June 2010 but that they still must back a Congolese military operation against Rwandan Hutu Rebels in the east and in the north against the Uganda-based Lord's Resistance Army, which has reportedly been mutilating and raping villagers. Le Roy said a U.N. team is in Congo to discuss with authorities how to reshape the U.N. mission and will report to the U.N. Security Council by April 1.
