The army said three soldiers are dead following two avalanches in the Himalayan heights of Indian-controlled Kashmir. Army spokesman Lt. Col. J.S. Brar said Thursday the deaths occurred at the northern tip of the divided Himalayan region claimed by both India and Pakistan. He said the incident happened late Wednesday. The latest casualties take the toll in avalanche-related soldiers' deaths in the region to 21 this week, AP reported. India and Pakistan have deployed troops at elevations of up to 22,000 feet (6,700 meters). The area is the world's highest battlefield, where more soldiers have died from harsh weather than combat.
