European Union Commissioner Margot Wallstrom confirmed Sunday that she has been appointed as the United Nations special representative for violence against women in conflicts, dpa reported. Wallstrom, 55, as well as the Swedish government, confirmed her appointment by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, who announced the move earlier Sunday at the African Union summit in Addis Abeba. The appointment of the Swedish Social Democratic politician comes as she is about to leave her EU post as Vice President of the European Commission. She had long been considered as a potential candidate to assume the leadership of the Social Democrats. In 1999 she left the Swedish government to join the EU Commission in Brussels.
