The Spanish European Union presidency today urged Jordan to renew peace efforts in the Middle East where the situation was now ripe for a "definitive step" towards peace, according to dpa. The situation should be taken advantage of, Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero told Jordan's King Abdullah II in Madrid. Spain would back peace efforts both politically and financially, government sources quoted Zapatero as saying. Zapatero and Abdullah agreed on the importance of a Palestinian national reconciliation and on involving all the significant forces in a peace process based on the creation of a Palestinian state and on security for Israel. Abdullah also held talks with King Juan Carlos during his working visit. Abdullah was later due to visit Switzerland to take part in the activities of the World Economic Forum at Davos, where he will meet with world leaders and executives of international firms.
